Discover the real Champagne at one of the numerous chambres d’hôtes (bed and breakfasts), many run by champagne wine producers and their families. These are often as well equipped and more spacious than two-star hotels, and their breakfasts are invariably a delight. A number of chambres d’hôtes also offer dinner (booked in advance). These meals, invariably including wines, range from a simple but sustaining repast to a gourmet experience.

Some wine farmers may offer you a glass or two of their rebêche with your meal. This is a still wine, made from what was left over from the press, which is normally sent to the distillery. It is not for sale but given to the workers, or members of a co-operative, for drinking at home.

If you are going out to dinner then the chances are, before you leave, your host will invite you to share a bottle of their own champagne as your apéritif. And if you enjoy it, then they will be more than happy to sell you a few bottles to take home! Here are four of Philippe’s favourite chambres d’hôtes...
